The Chafee Program's mission is to ensure that youth involved in foster care receive services and support enabling them to successfully transition to living independently.
Voluntary programming is available with a Regional Transition Coordinator and may include:
The Chafee Program serves youth, ages 14 and older, who are or were in foster care. Please contact your foster care agency to see if you are eligible.
The Chafee Program provides assistance to eligible youth in these areas:
The National Youth in Transition Database (NYTD) collects data from select current and former foster care youth to help advance foster care systems across the nation. North Dakota encourages youth to participate and provides an incentive for completing the survey.
This card was created specifically for current and former foster care youth eligible to participate in the North Dakota Chafee Program.

What are General Flex Funds?
Money used to provide non-housing related goods and services on behalf of a youth participant.
Who is eligible?
Up to $250 per youth each year
What is an ETV?
Money to meet the education and training needs of foster care youth.
Who is Eligible?
Up to $5,000 per year, $25,000 lifetime maximum
What are Room and Board Flex Funds?
Money used to assist youth with rent, deposits, and utilities. The funds are intended to help youth move into a permanent home and not to prolong dependency.
